Smirnoff Vodka – As clear as your conscience

Posted in Reviews at 12:54 pm by Leon

The title is picked up straight from the ad-campaign, not being much of a whisky drinker and just relatively new into the drinking era of my life this is one spirit that I just cannot bear to resist …

The bottle itself looks appealing, and this stuff looks almost as clear as plain water, almost completely odourless and with a sparkly taste,I guess this is one of the best vodka's I've tried so far

Smirnoff Vodka

Smirnoff vodka (Red label) is triple distilled, filtered 10 times, suprisingly pure (approx 37.5 % alcohol),something that makes it really tough to drink up neat, unless you've had enough experience getting used to it burning up your throat or if your just too drunk to notice it

As with all vodka's,Smirnoff too gives you a nice warm feeling deep down inside,so whenever it starts raining my roommate Tijo never fails to pull out a bottle of this stuff from somewhere and the two of us go to our smoking square and have a couple of shots together (well in certain cases when it is not available he does take extreme measures to procure it,but thats a different story altogether)

I personally feel its tastes the best when diluted with Sprite or 7up,that brings out a sparkly flavour that I fail to find in other vodka's like White Mischief and Romanov's. Alternate methods include with orange juice,or coconut water (preferably in the shell, according to hearsay), Any other suggestions will be gratefully accepted by me :)

An interesting way of taking it neat is called the flame shot

  • Take a spoon of sugar and pour vodka over it into a glass.
  • Light the spoon of sugar and pour the flame into the glass with the sugar
  • Stir fast and put out the flame
  • Shoot it
    • Be careful while pouring the vodka so that you dont start a fire you can't put out and be careful that you don't burn your hand
    • Disclaimer Don't blame me if anything goes wrong

Another interesting way

Add orange tang to vodka (half teaspooon to about 40-50ml).Cut a green chilly into no. of pieces and empty out the seeds, throw in the chilly skin and look at d bubbles coming out. Add some mint (half a polo) and squeeze half a lemon, now burn the whole mix wid a match till some black stuff is floating around…… now GO bottoms up, without ice.

Its generally known as a very versatile drink, making up an important ingridient in many exotic cocktails

If all fails to impress you,do it my roommate Tijo's way,up neat and straight from the bottle, never misses its target and leaves you suprisingly refreshed (and not on planet earth)

However according to my basic research

""Vodka is one of the most neutral of drinks, it is almost the purest form of alcohol that one would get to drink. Most Spirits (like whiskey or brandy) get their flavor and aroma from congeners.

Congeners are almost non-existent in Vodka's and congeners the main culprits when it comes to hang overs and the sickening feelings the day after.

Ideally a Vodka has no after effect … unless you pop in one glass too many""

Unfortunately, being just college students the cost is too prohibitive (being almost double the price of other vodka's) and since most of the time its only the kick we seek,Smirnoff isn't usually on the bar-table (unless I'm feeling extremely rich …)

Other than the cost, one fabulous Vodka,be sure to try it out ..

A parting note : Please Do Drink Responsibly :-D

I like Absolut and Finlandia. Both go down very nicely – perhaps too nicely (I can’t stop if I’m having a good night!!)

About the Congeners – My worst hangovers have all been via vodka :)

  14. hterry said,

I’ll do some shots with the Smirnoff (Orange drop) but like Jack, I prefer Absolut straight vodka and Finlandia infused with coconut is better which reminds me I need to go get some more this weekend. I have tried the vanila Smirnoff and let me just say *ewwww* It does not taste good at all.

@ tiff – you betta get back to me with details abt how the night went :)

@ Anto – I doubt if any kids have the patience to read my blog, but if they do I’m Sure your advice will be in vain, but nice try to keep ‘em in check :D

@ Shaman – well I’m not really trying to promote vices but oh boy,u r missing something

@ Jack – , I’ve heard alot abt Absolut but never really gotten a chance to try that thing out, maybe hopefully in the near future I shall n then maybe I’ll Write a review on tat stuff later
Abt cogeners, I think it maybe a specific allergic reaction that you are suffering from cause my major hangovers are from Bacardi, even if I do just a PEG !!!!

@ hterry – Well I was referring to the Plain triple distilled Vodka, I myself don’t like the Vanilla twist but the Orange Twist is something great :D

I’m a bit of a vodka snob these days (a nice way of admitting that I’m slipping down the crumbling mountainside of alcoholism). But one of my favorite ways to drink vodka is to do a lemon drop shot.

Either keep your vodka in the freezer or chill it in a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour into shot glasses. Cut a lemon into wedges and coat a wedge with white sugar. Pour vodka down throat, insert wedge into mouth and suck. It tastes like lemonade.

  20. Leon said,

Thanks for the tip Invisible, will try tat out soon hopefully

I’ve never been able to get high on vodka. It gives me a headache, for some reason. The more I drink, the bigger the headache. Scotch, on the other hand…

In college it was Killian’s Red. Man… Killian’s made for some damn good times.

  22. Peety said,

    Heeey Leon…

All this talk about Vodka always makes me thirsty…

Please let me know when you try the red vodka with redbull..
    (It is an energy kick)…

    Almost week-end :-)

  23. blueyes said,

Yep Invisible, I do that too but with an orange hence and orange drop :)

  24. Leon said,

@ Carl – seriously I don’t get why you guys suffer from an hangover after drinking vodka, I actually get up crystal clear !!!

@ Peety – Well don’t talk abt thirst with me … I am just about managing to stay without Vodka

@ blueyes – Orange twist smirnoff is for u then !!!!

vodka with lemonaide. good stuff. due to the fact that i no longer have a pancreas, at the tender age of 22 i am no longer able to consume alcohol. it was never a good idea given my state of my health but i did it anyway knowing that all too soon the day would come when i wouldn’t be able to any longer, and alas, it has. and it sucks! but i love smirnoff, it’s my favorite. i took a liking to vodka straight away because of the warm burning sensation, and it also got me drunk fast! and surprisingly, i never got hungover! and with smirnoff, the taste was almost enjoyable at the highest proof, and was also least likely to get me hungover. maybe due to it being so pure? i don’t really know. i just wanted to suggest mixing it with lemonaide, it was my fav :) drink safe, my friend, and please don’t ever drive drunk!
