A Search for the Impossible - Curing an Hangover

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:47 am by Leon

Ok so you’ve partied hard all night … And you’ve had a ball of a time … And now you’ve gotten home and the next morning hell breaks out … Gotten the picture right ????

I guess you’ve gotten the picture straight but for all those innocent people who havent I’m talking about hangovers :) and my ever elusive search to find out the best way to cure them

“A wise crack told me “Prevention is Better than Cure” ,instead of waking up the next day trying to cure your headache why don’t you cure it the previous night itself by going clean “

I won’t comment on that …

Hangovers

Here I’ve complied a list of hangover cures that are bound to work, stick to this and your bound not to land up with anymore hangovers (or rather atlst reduce their intensity)

However,if you find yourself running to find a hangover cure every second day, I think the best thing for you to do would be to contact Alcoholic Anonymous (I’m sorry Tijo but I couldn’t find any better way to break the news to you)

Hangovers are a mild version of the withdrawal symptom suffered by Alcoholics (if this is mild, imagining the original withdrawal symptoms, omg who would wanna give up ??? ).Alcohol relaxes the blood vessels allowing more blood to circulate around the body. This makes people who drink feel warm, but, if they drink too much the blood vessels can open too wide, causing nerve activity and pain.Free radicals are unbalanced atoms created when your body processes alcohol. When your system tries to dilute the number of free radicals by drawing fluid out of healthy cells, you get dehydrated hence urination

Different people get a hangover drinking different kinds of spirit and certainly choosing the right type of liquor does play an important role in determining the intensity of your hangover (But CERTAINLY three vodka shots, a shot of whiskey, two tequila’s, a couple of glasses of wine and a couple of bottles of beer will do it every time) Generally, darker drinks such as red wine, brandy and port tend to have more congeners than white wine, gin and vodka.Champagne is particularly risky as the bubbles speed up the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.

Generally the intensity of your hangover depends on three factors

  • The quantity
  • Ability to digest alcohol (and weight)
  • Age

Things to remember while drinking to reduce a hangover are to reduce dehydration as much as possible (always works for me !!!! ) Keep drinking plenty of water even though you keep going to the toilet to pee …. But keep at it

Other helpful tips
* Never drink on an empty stomach
* NO cigarettes ;smoking makes you thirsty
* Alternate some soft drinks with the alcoholic ones;
* In the morning,avoid drinking coffee as this increases dehydration;
* avoid “hair of the dog” cures which involve drinking more alcohol

Now to what I’ve been after for so long … curing alcoholic hangovers :D

Tijo uses the tactical vomit trick, plus it also has the added bonus of allowing you to consume more alcohol than you would normally be able to. The only known side effect is a that your mouth taste of vomit for the remainder of the drinking time which is fine for you as by that stage you have lost all sense of taste but not so pleasant for those in your proximity.

Before you go to bed take any headache pill that is made of Ibuprofen.Aspirin does not help.Neither does Tylenol.Tylenol will destroy your liver if combined with alcohol

Choose your booze with care

Try controlling the rate at which you drink (not recommended by me),this givs your liver a better chance to break down the alcohol

Try taking a multi-vitamin to replace all the Vitamin B you’ve pissed out

Finally if none of them work, you can always try what the Peurto Ricans do .. rub a lemon under your armpits !!!!

Smirnoff Vodka - As clear as your conscience

Posted in Reviews at 12:54 pm by Leon

The title is picked up straight from the ad-campaign, not being much of a whisky drinker and just relatively new into the drinking era of my life this is one spirit that I just cannot bear to resist …

The bottle itself looks appealing, and this stuff looks almost as clear as plain water, almost completely odourless and with a sparkly taste,I guess this is one of the best vodka's I've tried so far

Smirnoff Vodka

Smirnoff vodka (Red label) is triple distilled, filtered 10 times, suprisingly pure (approx 37.5 % alcohol),something that makes it really tough to drink up neat, unless you've had enough experience getting used to it burning up your throat or if your just too drunk to notice it

As with all vodka's,Smirnoff too gives you a nice warm feeling deep down inside,so whenever it starts raining my roommate Tijo never fails to pull out a bottle of this stuff from somewhere and the two of us go to our smoking square and have a couple of shots together (well in certain cases when it is not available he does take extreme measures to procure it,but thats a different story altogether)

I personally feel its tastes the best when diluted with Sprite or 7up,that brings out a sparkly flavour that I fail to find in other vodka's like White Mischief and Romanov's. Alternate methods include with orange juice,or coconut water (preferably in the shell, according to hearsay), Any other suggestions will be gratefully accepted by me :)

An interesting way of taking it neat is called the flame shot

  • Take a spoon of sugar and pour vodka over it into a glass.
  • Light the spoon of sugar and pour the flame into the glass with the sugar
  • Stir fast and put out the flame
  • Shoot it
    • Be careful while pouring the vodka so that you dont start a fire you can't put out and be careful that you don't burn your hand
    • Disclaimer Don't blame me if anything goes wrong

Another interesting way

Add orange tang to vodka (half teaspooon to about 40-50ml).Cut a green chilly into no. of pieces and empty out the seeds, throw in the chilly skin and look at d bubbles coming out. Add some mint (half a polo) and squeeze half a lemon, now burn the whole mix wid a match till some black stuff is floating around…… now GO bottoms up, without ice.

Its generally known as a very versatile drink, making up an important ingridient in many exotic cocktails

If all fails to impress you,do it my roommate Tijo's way,up neat and straight from the bottle, never misses its target and leaves you suprisingly refreshed (and not on planet earth)

However according to my basic research

""Vodka is one of the most neutral of drinks, it is almost the purest form of alcohol that one would get to drink. Most Spirits (like whiskey or brandy) get their flavor and aroma from congeners.

Congeners are almost non-existent in Vodka's and congeners the main culprits when it comes to hang overs and the sickening feelings the day after.

Ideally a Vodka has no after effect … unless you pop in one glass too many""

Unfortunately, being just college students the cost is too prohibitive (being almost double the price of other vodka's) and since most of the time its only the kick we seek,Smirnoff isn't usually on the bar-table (unless I'm feeling extremely rich …)

Other than the cost, one fabulous Vodka,be sure to try it out ..

Spaniards to Glory…..

Posted in Worldcup at 3:24 am by Leon

A remarkable Spanish Fightback, even though after going one down to Tunisia, the determination, fight and ultimate victory of the Spanish are to be applauded, even though my heart bleeds at the thought of victory being snatched out of the grasp of the African team who played very well indeed considering the lack of financial and material support that their counterparts enjoyed,BUT I guess the Spanish very and truly do need to revel in the glory of this hard-fought victory…

Au contraire, the Saudi Arabian contigent was pathetic, except for a very amusing and brilliant display by the goal-keeper (concentrating all my sarcasm in the sentence) none of the other members of the squad requires mentioning,Shevchencko was really brilliant, scoring a wonderful goal and even though the Ukraine team in my opinion arent a world-class side,I'd say it was a good performance, was it just their day or a lack-lustre Saudi side that they played against ??? I guess we'll never know

Togo put up a really wonderful fight, even though they may be flying back after their final match, they will be going home without a single scratch on their pride. They spent the whole of the previous night arguing with the management over the non-payment of their salaries, imagine each country being given 7 million swiss francs and not a single player had been paid, they were not even interested in playing the match today, but they did and put up a wonderful game I would say… But no snatching credit from the Swiss, second goal was scintillating,it was marvelous at the same time a feeling of pity for the Togo keeper…. He had played a wonderful role in keeping goals out …

Looking forward to tomorrows matches….

Les Bleus

Posted in Worldcup at 4:10 am by Leon

So disappointing…unexpected World Cup win in '98,unexpected World Cup knock out in '02 and now a pathetic finish in tonight's game..

I guess the first ten mins after kick-off were the most energetic minutes I've ever seen from the french in a long time…after that goal they played like amatures…sluggishly

I admit that korean goal wasnt the best of goals, actually it was so unexpected even the koreans were shocked that they had scored it…

But is it "the end of Les Bleus",i so do not hope so…they are a great team,if not on the field atleast on paper and I hate to think that this game "could" be the last Worldcup game for Zidane,a most probable pathetic finish for a geat hero

My friend left today, the last 15 days with him have been fabulously great and the two of us caught ever single worldcup match till today,i was so depressed that i didnt bother to watch any game cept the french one and that disappointed me even more…

Disappointing once again…

Ill try and update tomorrow, too depressed today to write anything more…missing my buddy so much :'(
